Call out . . . is a live transmission arts performance,
consisting of an anonymous phone survey where we rip a random page out
of the local phone book and call each number sequentially asking the
people on the other end of the line about the first thing they think
of when hear the word "feminism." The resultant sound piece iterates
from seemingly endless dial tones and ringing, to strange momentary
windows into random people's lives and politics. Call out . . .
provides a dissonant illustration of the chaos, disparity, and
heterogeneity of contemporary feminist positions.
We first performed call out . . . on a live radio broadcast
at East Village Radio as part of Performa 09 (transcript on poster
above), and we have since made a number of spontaneous private
performances, recorded for our archive.
